Topical Review - Sustainable Competetive Strategy

There has been a recent tendency for business firms to believe that "strategy" is no longer relevant. They believe the pace of external change means there is no time to develop a strategy that is sustainable.

Tools designed to improve Organisational Effectiveness (OE) have been promoted as the latest managerial "fad" and in the quest for modernity and performance have tended to supplant the creation of distictive strategies. The Internet and E-Commerce are mistaken for strategies - "period", instead of distinct and valuable OE enhancing activities within an overall strategic position. The result would appear to be what some call "hypercompetition", with too many firms benchmarking, copying best practice, becoming the same, but unable to capture sufficient value for long term viability.
